Cast iron radiators installed at Iconic Town HallApril 21, 2015
Over 230 Ionic cast iron radiators from MHS Radiators have been installed at Wakefield Town Hall, West Yorkshire. The historic Victorian building, which is Grade I listed by English Heritage, has been undergoing refurbishment since December 2013. Due to the prestige of the venue, some radiators have had heat shields and extended brackets fitted to protect the oak panelling on the walls. Plus, MHS Radiators Chartwell valves have also been used as part of the installation, while the venue is expected to reopen in February 2015 to host weddings and special events.
Commenting on the renovation of the building, Chris Lund, Mechanical Engineer at the venue’s Building Services Department (Heating Division), said: “The installation of the new radiators is part of a refurbishment of the Town Hall. The project required the whole heating system to be replaced and upgraded, yet remain in the original style of the building, which dates back to Victorian times. The Ionic range from MHS Radiators was selected by NPS North East in line with all the requirements that apply to a listed building.”
Speaking about how MHS Radiators came to be specified, David Lee, Design Engineer at NPS North East, commented: “We looked at an array of cast iron radiator samples, analysing their value for money, quality and finish. The Ionic from MHS Radiators had the smoothest finish and casting, which met the approval of English Heritage. The building’s original heating system was a mixture of storage heaters, gas fires and a partial ‘wet’ type heating system comprising of cast iron ring main distributions, solely within the corridors and also a handful of ornate radiators within public function rooms, so being able to specify these products as part of the redesign project ensured a significant improvement in heating the Town Hall, whilst also maintaining the original style of the building.”
Ideal for modern or traditional settings alike, the versatile Ionic cast iron column radiator from MHS combines authentic traditional styling with modern reliability and comfortable heating. Sturdy floor standing models with integral feet or wall mounted versions for ease of siting are available. All radiators are supplied as standard in a primer that requires painting or, alternatively, can be fully factory painted by MHS to many RAL colour finishes (additional costs apply) to blend with almost any colour scheme.
Stately by name and by nature, Chartwell valves have been designed is the perfect accompaniment to the traditional radiator. Cast in solid brass, valves combine modern efficiency with a period design, while TRV variants are also available.
